Dentures vs. Dental Implants
Lynnwood, WA

Traditional dentures soaking in a glass of waterIf you are missing all or most of your teeth, you may be wondering what to do next. The best thing you can do for your oral health is find an appropriate tooth replacement. At Aesthetic Restorative & Implant Dentistry Northwest, we offer some restorative treatments, such as dentures and dental implants, to repair the aesthetics and function of your smile. The following information can help you decide which restoration is right for you.

What Are Dentures?

A denture is a removable appliance that consists of prosthetic teeth set in acrylic, flesh-colored base. The base fits over the gum tissue and usually requires an adhesive to stay in place. While dentures can be beneficial for certain patients, they do possess the same benefits of alternatives like dental implants.

To fabricate and place a complete denture, we must remove any remaining problematic teeth. After the teeth are removed, there will be a brief healing period. We cannot place a complete denture until the tissues are completely healed. In the meantime, we may give you an immediate denture to restore your ability to chew foods. Once the healing process is complete, we will take an impression of your gum tissues and fabricate your final complete denture.

Disadvantages of Dentures
With dentures, simple tasks like chewing and speaking may take some practice. Unfortunately, some patients may experience some minor discomfort associated with their dentures. Dentures also need to relined, repaired, or repaired much more frequently than other restorations.

What Are Dental Implants?

Dental implants are successful largely due to the process of osseointegration. During osseointegration, the titanium post and your jawbone will fuse to foster a powerful bond capable of supporting the strongest bite forces. Osseointegration could take anywhere from six to nine months.

Once osseointegration is complete, we will place an abutment or support structure. The abutment links the implant post to your restoration. The restoration you receive depends on the number of missing teeth that need to be replaced. Thanks to improvements in technology, dental implants can be used to support a single dental crown, a fixed bridge, or a full-arch restoration. Full-arch restorations can be supported by as little as two implants and as many as eight, depending on your circumstance.

Benefits of Dental Implants

Dental implants possess some benefits over traditional dentures. Your implant-supported restoration will add:
•  Better aesthetics. Your restoration will look and feel just like your natural teeth.
•  Better function. Because the implant becomes a part of you, you will notice improvements in speech, chewing ability, and comfort. Implants are the next best thing to your natural teeth.
•  Better oral health. Unlike traditional dentures, your implant-supported restoration will preserve your bone structure. The implant post provides physical stimulation to the jawbone to prevent deterioration.
•  Better durability. An implant can last for several decades without issue. Under the proper care, your implant can even last a lifetime.
•  Improved self-esteem. Patients with missing teeth may become self-conscious about their smile. Dental implants can give you back a smile you want and deserve! You also never have to worry about the embarrassing slips often associated with dentures.

Implant-Supported Overdentures

An option you might want to consider if you are looking for more functional consistency, but do not want to replace all your missing teeth with single implants and crowns is a bar-retained, is an implant-supported overdenture. This is a hybrid solution that optimizes both the benefits of comprehensive dentures with that of implants.
